The fruit fly life cycle

The fruit fly life cycle at 25 °C. At 19 °C, development takes approximately twice as long.

Day 1:      Eggs
Day 2:      Larva (first instar)
Day 3:      Larva (second instar)
Day 4-5:    Larva (third and final instar)
Day 6-10:   Pupa (pupariation occurs 120 hours after egg laying)
Day 11:     Eclosion. Males will not mate until 8-10 hours after eclosion.
Female lays eggs in about 48 hours. Flies can live up to 3 months or more.
